The National Telecommunications & Information Administration (“NTIA”) announced today that it will convene a series of meetings about the commercial uses of facial recognition technology. The goal of the meetings will be to develop a voluntary, enforceable code of conduct specifying how the Obama Administration’s “Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights” applies to facial recognition. The first of the meetings will take place on February 6, 2014.
These meetings follow the NTIA’s first series of multistakeholder meetings, a year-long process that resulted in a draft code of conduct encouraging app developers to provide better notices about their apps’ collection, use and sharing of consumer data. The code of conduct is currently in a testing phase. No further meetings have been scheduled.
