In late December 2025, the FCC updated its “Covered List” to add foreign-produced Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (“UAS”) and their critical components. In early January 2026, the FCC narrowed that action by creating a temporary exception for certain UAS and critical components, including those on the Department of War’s Blue UAS Cleared List.
Last week, on March 18, 2026, the FCC announced that it applied this exception for the first time to remove the following four UAS and related components from the Covered List based on a determination by the Department of War determined that they do not pose national security risks: the SiFly Aviation Q12, the Mobilicom SkyHopper Series / M Band / Tactical Data Link and related controllers/software, the ScoutDI Scout 137, and the Verge X1.
According to the FCC, UAS and their critical components that receive this sort of conditional approval are exempt from Covered List restrictions. Entities seeking similar treatment for their UAS can submit the required materials to drones@fcc.gov for review by the Department of War and the Department of Homeland Security.
